Paint with me: Sunrise

Hellooo,

So I decided to try painting something new again and I went to my folder on my laptop where I've stored all the references of pictures that I want to draw or paint and I found this picture of a beautifully shaded sunrise. It seemed fairly easy to paint and I wasn't in the mood to try something challenging. But as usual, I always end up underestimating a picture. I mean, it wasn't extremely hard but it wasn't the easiest thing to paint either, mostly because so much shading is involved. And using acrylic paints, shading is always a challenge for beginners like me because of how fast it dries up. But I watched a few youtube videos and I had an idea on how to merge different colours together and I guess it came out pretty neat for a beginner. (I feel like I'm always saying "for a beginner" to justify the slight noobness that maybe apparent in my paintings hahaha) But, nonetheless, I am quite happy with how I'm progressing in terms of acrylic painting and I will soon try my hands on some watercolour painting too. ( bless youtubers for being such a good teacher)

So this is what I painted, I had recently posted a picture of this on my instagram too.

The specific paints I used are:

cerulean blue

scarlet red

purple

orange

lemon yellow

titanium white

So on to the whole process

Got some blue on this cardstock that I'm using as a palette

Then I mixed some water to the blue to make it runny and I painted the whole canvas to create the fading effect from dark to light blue

Next I got some purple and ultramarine blue on the side

And I mixed the cerulean blue with ultramaring blue and painted bottom half of the canvas

and then I mixed purple with cerulean 

and painted in the middle like this and kind of mixed the purple blue shade with the bottom dark blue shade to get this shaded effect

Next I took scarlet red and lightened that up a bit by mixing it with white

Then I mixed that red with the cerulean blue

and painted above the purple and mixed all the 3 shades together so they merge

Then I took some orange

And painted it above the red and mixed all the 4 colours again to keep making sure they blend nicely and not look like 4 different colours

Then I took some lemon yellow

And did the same thing

Then I mixed some cerulean with white so its a nice blue like how it is during daytime

And painted it right at the top

Then use some nice clean water and wet your paintbrush in it and paint to merge all the colours 

Then I mixed one part of cerulean with 2 parts of white

And used this rounded paintbrush to create clouds by dabbing it like this

Then I took some white

And created highlights on the clouds to make it fluffy

And then finally, create a nice white circle inbetween to create the sun and you're done :)

So that was that. Pretty long post but I hope you enjoyed it if you read the whole thing till here. I'm still trying to get hang of paints but I'm happy with how I'm progressing. I hope I'm able to do more complexed paintings next time.

Drawing: Cute baby girl

Hey everyone,

So I'm back with another drawing and oh my god, this was...NOT EASY AT ALL!! I found this picture of a baby girl on twitter (it will be inserted here later on) and she was just so adorable, I had to draw her. If you are a constant reader of all my blog posts then you probably know that I can somewhat sketch portraits using normal hb pencils but I have only recently started to work on drawing slightly more realistic pictures using colour pencils. Clearly, as you will be able to tell from the final result of my picture, I am no where near the kind of realistic I was aiming for but I am not unhappy with the results either. I think it still came out a pretty cute picture, not as exact as I would've liked it to be but it's cute nonetheless. And considering this is only my second attempt at using colour pencils, I guess I can forgive myself for some of the mistakes I made. I definitely learnt a lot through making mistakes for this one and hopefully the next one I try out (which will be pretty soon) comes out better. 

So some of the mistakes I made and the things I learnt are:

• When you're drawing out the initial sketch, try to not use the pencils to draw out the details on the face, for example, the facial lines or details in the eyes or lips or nose because when you use colour pencils over it, chances are the pencil lead will smudge with the colour pencils and it will also give it a very unnatural look as you will see later on. so what I realized later on was that next time, I should lightly erase the drawing, just enough for me to see the lines as a guide to know where to shade and just enough so the pencil lead marking isn't visible.
• Color small sections at a time. Colour pencils are extremely sensitive I realized. and small extra stoke will be very clearly visible. If you colour big chunks at once, you will see really ugly streaks that will be pretty hard to get rid off. You are aiming for a smooth finish and the best way for that is to do small sections precisely even if that takes a longer time.
• Try to use a smoother paper. I don't actually know if a different kind of paper is used to draw these realistic pictures to get a smooth photo finish effect but I think that is what should be used. I drew mine on a very thick grainy art paper in my drawing pad which I think wasn't very ideal as you will be able to tell seeing the grainy effect in my drawing. I will be trying out my next attempt on a normal printing A4 sized paper and we shall see if that makes any difference.
• Do not depend too much on a blending pencil. They are ok for small sections but for big areas, they will end up giving a streaky effect.

Aaaaaand that's pretty much what I wanted to say. I will go ahead and show you the whole process now

So that is pretty much it. And yes...I am aware I wrote the year wrongly hahaha, I swear I drew this only a few days back and not last year.

Draw with me: Veiled Eyes

Hello guys,

I feel like this blog is actually turning out to be more and more for my art rather than a blog about my life? But I guess that's not a bad idea. I'm just not into the whole "journal blog" idea because firstly, I am very lazy and I forget very easily, and secondly, I'm not the type of person to put out my life in public in detail as a blog post, not because I think there is anything wrong in that, but mostly because I can't be bothered to take much pictures when I go out and like just narrate about my life because seriously who will be interested to read about my life, I mean let's be real. And plus, I'm active on twitter and instagram anyway and that's enough for me. But of course, if anything drastic was to happen or something really special, I will write about it here. I don't like limiting myself to any theme or topic, but you can be sure it's going to be mostly art related stuff because I do enjoy documenting my art process and showing it on a public media to whoever is interested to see it and also it is quite fun and I get to see how I'm improving because I know I'm no where near a good artist yet. 

I know I have a bad habit of rambling before starting with a post SO MOVING ON WITH LIFE...

My boyfriend got me the best birthday present I could've ever asked for, which is the 72 colours Prismacolour colour pencils. I would've never bought that on my own because it is so damn expensive and I genuinely feel I don't deserve such pencils yet, but he being one of the biggest supporter and encourager of my love for art, thought that I deserve the best pencils even if its just to practice drawing. 

(I know he's reading this right now so this is for you "Thank you for being so damn sweet and encouraging even when I'm no where near a very good artist yet and encouraging me to keep trying even when I fail :*")

So I had to use these pencils and try out something. I was actually very scared to start using them because it feels very different to use colour pencils when I'm so used to using normal hb, 2b, 4b and 6b and 8b pencils for drawing in black and white. I mean it's easier to cover up your mistakes and make it look more realistic. With colour pencils, you have to be aware of soooo many range of colours and hints and tones in a certain picture and it's hard to pick them out and shade it properly. But I also understand that that will only come with more practice, I cannot expect to use colour pencils for the first time and get it perfect. So I guess for a first try, I'm quite satisfied with this piece but of course I personally can see a lot of mistakes and I know it's not realistic at all but I guess to achieve that I'll just have to try more and more. 

I do would like to reiterate the fact that I do not post the process of my art stuff here to teach anything because I'm too under qualified for that, BUT it's more like a "backstage" view of my final drawings and what I do to get it the way I got it. It's also for me to see how much I'm improving and also hopefully help someone out in anyway through posting my own process, be it by using the same technique as me or just getting an inspiration from it or even correcting it. And it's also just fun to blog.

And that was that. I know it's not perfect but it's not bad either right? I hope you liked it anyway :) And just btw, I got the original picture off google so I'm not taking credit for being imaginative or anything, but I needed a picture as a reference.
