Paint with me: Forest

Hi guys,

Little update:
So I'm posting before the month ends so you know what this means...I PASSED EVERYTHING FOR MY A LEVELS. Yes please clap for me because this is the same girl who failed 2 years straight for most of her exams. I cannot believe I'm out of that hellhole for good now and I never have to go back there ever again except to collect my SGC. I honestly thought I may have to retake my A levels privately but I'm glad I got more than what I expected. And if any of you are curious, I will be starting my undergrad in Lasalle from August onwards and I'm really happy that after passing all my subjects my admission is now confirmed. I'll finally be doing something I always loved to do after like 6 years of studying subjects I had absolutely 0 interest in and it really was so torturous. If there is anything I've learnt from this whole experience is to do something that YOU WANT TO DO and NOT WHAT OTHERS CONSIDER IS BEST FOR YOU. From upper secondary till my JC days I did what others considered the best. I took Pure Science stream in sec 3 and 4 and I went to JC after that simply because all I ever heard was "wow you did so well for science, you should take pure sciences and Amaths, you'll do great" "wow you're going to JC, your uni admission is guaranteed". And what did I get out of listening to all this: 6 years of sheer torture. I hated science and even though I took Arts in JC, I hated the whole education system in JC and I didn't have any interest in Arts subjects as well. So yeah, always follow your heart as cliche as it sounds and don't be afraid to choose the path you feel you will be passionate for even if others may look down on your choice. Because yeah it may sound impressive when you tell everyone you're doing this very fancy course in uni but if you don't have any interest in it, it's just going to be hell. But of course if your interest does lie in that fancy shmancy course then good for you, but don't take it because of what others say about it.

OK I'M DONE RAMBLING TIME TO MOVE ON IN LIFE

So as you know, I'm trying to build my painting skills. So recently I painted this picture of a forest on a canvas as my boyfriend had asked me to draw a forest when I was in India but I didn't want to draw it and I didn't have any paints with me there. So I finally tried it out after coming back and I'm pretty satisfied with it. So here is how I did it and if any of you want to try your hands on it, I hope this post serves as a guideline for you :)

Exact names of the paints I used (I used OMNI Acrylic Paints btw)
- brown: burnt umber
- green: yellow green, phthalocyanine green, sap green
- yellow: lemon yellow, yellow ochre
- white: titanium white
- black: black

The picture of the forest that I painted was taken from google just btw

I began by mixing burnt umber with white

Then I used a sponge and dabbed lemon yellow around leaving some white spaces

Then I used the tip of this big brush to dab yellow green over the yellow

Then I used pure burnt umber and started painting the bigger tree branches that were in the front of the painting

Then I used black over it to give it some shade and depth

Then I painted the branches and trees behind and these won't be as thick and big as they are futher away

And for the really distant trees you make them very thin and small

After that I painted the sides of the path the same way I did the leaves with yellow and green and used white mixed with a little burnt umber for the part of the path that has light falling over it and pure burnt umber mixed with a little bit of black for areas that have shadows falling over.

I mixed some burnt umber and white again

And used the big brush to dab it on to the sides of the path

Then use a brush mixed with a little bit of water to smoothen it a bit so it doesnt look too dabby

Then I mixed a little white in phthalocyanine green

And used a small sponge to dab it in the darker areas of leaves and keep using yellpow green to blend it if the darker green becomes overpowering

Then I used sap green to make the bottom leaves on the path darker as shown

On the other side as well

Then I used yellow ochre and dabbed some dots for the fallen dried leaves

and then I used a toothbrush and sprayed some yellow ochre to make it look like many fallen leaves. I know it isnt the most perfect way to do this but I didn't really know any other way to give that effect. But from far it does look like fallen leaves. Spray more on the front and a little at the back

Then I just added some darker shade of brown for shadow

And then I went over the branches again at places where the paints had overlapped and this is how it looked so far. But then at this point the leaves didn't feel very satisfactory to me.

so I went ahead and mixed sap green with some black and used a small paint brush and dabbed it all over the leaves especially that had sparse white parts to give that small tiny leaves effect and to make it look full and bushier. And then I used some brown and black again to go over the trees. And this was the final result!

I had really fun painting this and I'm getting a little bit more confident with paints now. I know I'm not very good at painting but I'm still learning and I hope one day I'm able to paint really well. I will definitely be trying out more stuff so there will be more posts coming up :)

See you soon
